Cairn Curran Sailing Club, 8-10 March 2014

by Steve Moore

The 2014 Victorian State Championship was successfully run over the March long week-end at Cairn Curran Sailing Club, just a few hour North of the Melbourne.

With anticipation running high, Richard & Lesley Furneaux, arrived early Friday afternoon claiming best camp site & erecting two other tents for Michael & Elizabeth Williams – what a great family affair.

Saturday morning saw the arrival of no less than 15 OK’s with Sam Haines arriving late afternoon(and not missing any racing for the day) with everything apart from the kitchen sink, although I think I saw that as well.

Day 1 – Saturday 8th March 2014

Well this was a great day to sit & contemplate what might have been. A selected few, went for a quick sail & then found themselves becalmed on the other side of the lake taking hours to float back to the club.

Unfortunately there was no luck to set a course that kept doing 360 degrees.

By 4pm our race officer made the call to cancel racing for the day, with a promise to have some wind 5-7 knots from a steady direction.

Naturally the clubs bar went into overdrive and followed up with a relaxing BBQ for all.

Day 2 – Sunday 9th March 2014

The plan was to sail 3races back to back in the morning & the same in the afternoon session.

At last some light 5 – 6 knits wind from the same direction – well almost!. With this news Super Bruce Ashton had a extra spring in his step!

The morning session was successful, managing to complete 3 short races.

Race 1 – Mike Williams was too fast for Bruce & Roger Blasse with Albert Park expert Ron Ferguson on their heels
Race 2 – Again Mike Williams was too strong for Roger & Bruce with light weather expert Elizabeth Williams close behind
Race 3 – Roger Blasse made the break though he was looking for to win convincingly from Mike and Bruce with Chris Hall close behind
Unfortunately, due to lack of wind & direction the afternoon session was cancelled

In typical OK fashion the clubs bar went into overdrive and followed up with a relaxing Roast Beef/Sticky Date Pudding with some talk about “corn flakes” for breakfast in the morning?

Day 3 – Monday 9th March 2014

Like the previous day, the plan was to get as many races in as possible before 1:30 pm with the forecast not looking too good.
With luck, our race officer managed to get 3 short races in before the wind evaporated in the high temperatures

Race 4 – With Mike Williams not sailing for the rest of the regatta due to work commitments, Chris Hall took advantage of a 45 degree wind shift as did Elizabeth Williams & Steve Moore
Race 5 – Roger returned to the winner’s podium again followed by the fleets light weather experts Elizabeth and Bruce.
Race 6 – In typical fashion Roger scored his second win for the day from Ron & Bruce.
