2024 – OK Dinghy International Association https://okdia.org Sat, 10 May 2025 16:39:21 +0000 en-GB hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.9.4 https://okdia.org/wp-content/uploads/Icons/cropped-OKDIA-LOGO_only-RED-square-100x100.png 2024 – OK Dinghy International Association https://okdia.org 32 32 World Ranking November 2024: Roger Blasse is World No. 1 for the first time https://okdia.org/results/world-ranking-list-november-2024/ Tue, 19 Nov 2024 18:58:56 +0000 https://okdia.org/?p=2640 For the first time ever the former two time OK Dinghy world champion, Roger Blasse, from Australia, is the OK Dinghy World No.1. He moves up seven places in the final World Ranking List of 2024 to take the top spot for the first time in the 19 years the list has been running. It is his highest placing since July 2015, and only his fourth time inside the top 5 since 2005.

Sweden’s Patric Mure remains in second while Australia’s Brent Williams moves up one place to third, also his highest ever position. The only change into the top 10 is New Zealand’s Mark Perrow, re-entering at ninth.

The November 2024 release includes six events. Michal Strumnik won the Polish Nationals from Thomaz Flisiak and Pawel Pawlaczyk; Andre Budzien won the 80 boat German Nationals from Bo Petersen and Pin van Vugt; Andy Davis won the British Inlands from Matt Howard Simon Davis; and Roger Blasse won the Belgian Nationals from Greg Wilcox and Fabian Rossbacher.

Charlie Cumbley took the first win in an October double bill, winning the Autumn Trophy in Bandol from Sweden’s Thomas Hansson-Mild with Blasse third, before Luke Deegan won the European Championship in Palma a week later from Cumbley and Sweden’s Niklas Edler.

The new release includes 798 sailors from 21 nations. Both those numbers set new records for the class as it continues to grow worldwide.

The class is gearing up for a bumper 2025 with the European Championship scheduled for 3-9 July in Warnemunde, Germany, one of the classes favourite venues, with 120-150 boats expected.

Then from 12-19 September the World Championship is being held in Italy for the first time ever. The class returns to Arco, on Lake Garda, and to date there are an astounding 215 pre-entries. Whatever else, it is heading towards being the largest OK Dinghy event of all time, and by quite some margin. More details here: 2025.okworlds.org.

The next Ranking List release will be in the new year after the main southern hemisphere events have taken place.

OKDIA visit to the Royal Varuna Yacht Club https://okdia.org/news/international/okdia-visit-to-the-royal-varuna-yacht-club/ Wed, 13 Nov 2024 10:16:07 +0000 https://okdia.org/?p=2525 In November, OKDIA secretary, Robert Deaves and OKDIA TC Chair Alistair Deaves undertook a very successful site visit to the Royal Varuna Yacht Club in Pattaya, Thailand, ahead of a potential world championship bid. After two days of constructive talks, a bid for the 2027 World Championship is expected, with the club very enthusiastic and excited for the class to return after 14 years.

Those who took part in 2013 made memories on and off the water that will never be forgotten. Since then, the Thai fleet has developed and grown, and it is hoped can get ten or more boats on the water for a world championship.

In tandem with this visit, Alistair Deaves, International Measurer, ran an intensive measurement training session for a local Thai, Nat, resulting in him becoming the first Official Measurer for the class in Thailand. This will hopefully mean that all privately owned OK Dinghies at the club and around the country can become Class Rules compliant. In addition, the Thai class members present were instructed in proper documentation for the boats, so we hope to see all Thai boats properly registered with up to date certificates and THA numbers in the future.

The Royal Varuna Yacht Club posted this:

OKDIA would like to thank the Royal Varuna Yacht Club for its hospitality, John Higham, and Morten Jakobsen for making it all happen.

Luke Deegan becomes first non-European OK Dinghy European Champion https://okdia.org/results/luke-deegan-wins/ Mon, 04 Nov 2024 02:46:17 +0000 https://okdia.org/?p=2384 Luke Deegan, from New Zealand has won the 2024 OK Dinghy European Championship in Palma after a shortened week of challenging conditions with only four races completed. Britain’s Charlie Cumbley took silver while Niklas Edler, from Sweden, took the bronze. 82 sailors from 14 countries took part in what was the first ever OK Dinghy international championship in Spain.

No more races were possible on the final day despite the best efforts of the race committee. The fleet spent the day drifting around with the wind shifting from north-east to south but there was never enough for a race. After many starts, some with black flag, one race got as far as the wing mark and one near the top mark before being abandoned.

The conditions during the week were quite unusual. The practice race was sailed in high winds, two days were lost with no wind, one day was lost with a severe weather alert, and only one and a half days had enough wind to complete any races.

Greg Wilcox, also from New Zealand, said, “To be fair they tried to start us, which was OK, but every time they tried the wind died completely and we had almost nothing and then it died out, so two starts abandoned, and that’s it.”

Mark Jackson, from Australia, “Long and frustrating day. The wind just really didn’t want to settle. We went out on a promising northerly, but it never stayed around for long enough. So, we ended up with two upwinds, one downwind, a lot of starts and then we were towed.”

“The club has been fantastic. It’s a great place to be. We were a little challenged by the weather we understand that, but you can’t change that. We just accept it, but we had a lot of fun.”

Luke Deegan has become the first ever non-European, European Champion, “A really tough day, again trick on the head, but I’m happy with the result from yesterday. I am really love Palma as an island and for sure we haven’t seen the best of what it can offer. But the regatta has been really well organised, and everyone is super friendly in the fleet, congratulating me and helping me out where I need it, and so all good.”

It was a big week of firsts with the first Swiss sailor at an event for a quarter century, as well as the first Argentinian and Brazilian sailors to compete in an international championship in written records. The fleet in Palma is booming and many of those visiting this week mentioned training there over the winter, so it will only get bigger and bigger, and perhaps a return will be on the cards before too long.

As the fleet departs, it is already looking forward to next year’s championships, with large fleets expected at both events. The 2025 European Championship will be in Warnemunde, Germany, one of the classes all-time favourite venues for its big waves and clean winds. At least 150 boats are expected. Then the 2025 World Championship will be in Arco, on Lake Garda, Italy. There are already 180 pre-entries, and over 200 is not out of the question.

These large numbers are good problems to have, but it will all be just OK

Luke Deegan takes lead at OK Dinghy Europeans after one more race https://okdia.org/news/international/luke-deegan-takes-lead-at-ok-dinghy-europeans-after-one-more-race/ Sat, 02 Nov 2024 17:31:35 +0000 https://okdia.org/?p=2382 Luke Deegan, from New Zealand has taken the lead at the 2024 OK Dinghy European Championship in Palma after just one more race was sailed on Saturday. Overall, Britain’s Charlie Cumbley dropped to second while Sweden’s Niklas Edler climbed to third.

The fleet woke up to the happy news that the orange severe weather alert had been lifted and that racing could go ahead, but the wind was slow to build and in the end was no more than 5-7 knots. After multiple restarts, one race went ahead, but the dying breeze at the end meant 20 boats failed to finish.

Deegan led all the way, with many of the other favourites deep. It was shifty and patchy and some recovered back to near the front, but for some it was a tortuous race lookimg for pressuyre and angles to stay in the game.

As the breeze started to die again, he crossed well ahead of Edler and Poland’s Pawel Pawlaczyk, who had been there most of the race. Further racing was abandoned for the day.

Deegan said, “It was looking sort of marginal, and we attempted 3 or 4 starts as the wind was moving round to the right, and then had a 20 min postponement and then finally got away on a black flag stat.

“I came off the pin and got a bit of left shift to get over the fleet. And that was most of the race. Still a battle, especially in the head. I had a lot of Swedish guys on my tail all the way but really happy to come away with the win.”

On the competition. “I am really enjoying the fleet. We have 80 boats here so pretty awesome, and there’s some really good sailors amongst them and also a level for everyone.

“A good mate of mine, Tim Goodbody wasn’t able to do the Europeans, so he offered up his boat for me for this regatta. I’ve done a little bit of OK sailing this year with Tim, but jumped in a month ago, so I ended up here.

“I’ve come from Lasers, and the thing about the OK is that you can adjust the boat and adjust your settings a little bit more to make it work for you. And that’s why we have such a range of sizes and ages, and I really like that about the class and I am learning lots about pre-bend and mast rake and sail shape and all that sort of stuff, so it’s really good.”

The championship concludes on Sunday, with two more races possible.

Three races, three winners at OK Dinghy Europeans in Palma https://okdia.org/news/international/three-races-three-winners-at-ok-dinghy-europeans-in-palma/ Thu, 31 Oct 2024 21:31:12 +0000 https://okdia.org/?p=2370 Charlie Cumbley, from Britain, leads the OK Dinghy European Championship in Palma after the first three races were sailed on Thursday in Palma Bay. Luke Deegan, from New Zealand, is second, on equal points with Britain’s Matt Howard. All three took a race win each.

After the opening day was lost, the forecast came good with a very shifty north-easterly 8-15 knots, which kept everyone on their toes. The race management from the Real Club Nàutico de Palma was slick, with fast turnarounds and just one general recall.

Defending Champion, Cumbley, won the opening race after leading all the way by a comfortable margin. Deegan recovered from around sixth at the top to cross second with Howard third. Cumbley also led the next race, but Deegan passed him at the top of the second upwind and extended downwind for the win. Sweden’s Niklas Edlar was also making a charge and just got the overlap on Cumbley at the last leeward mark to take second.

Howard then dominated the final race leading all the way round. Behind him there was an intense scrap with Cumbley climbing up to second and Britain’s Andy Davis just pipping Tim Petetin, from France, for third on the finish line.

Matt Howard, “Really tricky day actually, with a north easterly, three races and the last one was an upwind finish, so plenty of upwind, plenty of shifts plenty of pressure. All run really smoothly by the race committee. It was real snake sand ladders today.

“I did all right. The middle race was a bit ropey but the other two were good.”

Cumbley, “Really nice breeze, more than I was expecting, so all day hiking which the legs are finding hard. But I won the first race. I kind of got away and there was a group fighting behind me which kept them at bay, which was nice, so nice to start with a race win.

“Then I got a third and a second, so really pleased with that. I was quite lucky as my compass died on the way out, but luckily the shifts were big enough that you could see them with the compass.

“Really good day, great racing, and everyone is competitive, with some new guys that are really quick, Luke in particular, so plenty to look forward to in the next days.”

Both Cumbley and Howard have put in a lot of hours in Palma Bay in the Finn in years past. How much of the old Palma knowledge is kicking in? Howard laughed, “Absolutely none at all. I’ve never raced on that part of Palma Bay, and not much in a north easterly, and it’s a lot different watching it than doing it yourself.”

Cumbley said, “I came here last month for the J70 Worlds and I was coaching. I did a couple of days in the boat beforehand and we did have a day at the worlds in these conditions. So, I haven’t done loads, but at least it’s not my first day out there.

“The Finn racing was in a different part of the bay, though still the same geographical features. You had to be relatively punchy to get to the left-hand side, which generally paid, but there was always a right shift that people could get back on so plenty on.”

Racing is scheduled to continue at 12.00 on Friday, though racing is currently in the balance with an orange weather alert in place in Palma. A decision will be made in the morning. The event concludes on Sunday 3 November

Get set, ready….wait https://okdia.org/news/international/get-set-ready-wait/ Wed, 30 Oct 2024 22:16:00 +0000 https://okdia.org/?p=2356 Despite a forecast for good wind, the first day of the OK Dinghy European Championship in Palma was abandoned late afternoon with not enough wind to run racing. The fleet was held ashore until the breeze was up to 8 knots but by the time they arrived on the course area, it was dying and never came back. The bay had been enveloped in sea fog early morning and this never really cleared enough for the breeze to become established.

82 OK Dinghies from 14 nations are taking part in the event.

There is a challenging forecast fir the week ahead and three races are scheduled for Thursday from 11.00.

First ever OK Dinghy major championship in Spain opened in Palma https://okdia.org/news/international/first-ever-ok-dinghy-major-championship-in-spain-opened-in-palma/ Tue, 29 Oct 2024 19:41:21 +0000 https://okdia.org/?p=2344 The OK Dinghy European Championship was opened in Palma Tuesday evening with 82 sailors from 14 nations completing registration. Hosted by the Real Club Nàutico de Palma, it will be the first ever international OK Dinghy championship to be held in Spain.

A few hardy souls ventured out for the practice race in 20-25 knots while many enjoyed the hospitality of the club ahead of what looks like a tough week ahead. Though a largely cloudy day temperature were in the mid 20s.

At the opening ceremony in the evening, the sailors were welcomed on behalf of the club by Hugo Ramon. He commented, “The OK Dinghy is a great example of how working together we can achieve great things. As board member it is a source of pride to see that adults have a category where they can compete on equal terms. Seeing the constant activity of the OK Dinghy is admirable and I would to thank Javier Estarellas, Luis Portella, and Mark Branagh whose passion has been responsible for the health of this class in Mallorca. We welcome you to our home and wish you an excellent regatta.”

OKDIA President Mark Jackson, from Australia, responded by saying, “What a thrill it is to be here in Palma. It is a literally a bucket list venue for all of those of us who sail dinghies. I’ve always wanted to come and sail here and when the OKDIA Committee discussed coming here following the growth of the Spanish OK Dinghy class, when the opportunity arose to have a European Championship here, we said absolutely.”

This event marks Jackson’s final event as class President. He is retiring after seven and a half years in the role, one of the longest terms anyone has held the position of President.

He continued, “It’s been an absolute privilege. I have seen the class change a lot in that time, with a lot of different people. It has been a wonderful journey from my perspective. We have a wonderful OKDIA Committee and I have been so lucky to work with them.”

Jackson has led the class through some difficult years and led many tough decisions during the pandemic surrounding cancelling events. He has also been driving many of the current class initiatives to continue the growth and development of the class worldwide. On the water he has also achieved success with most recently an eighth place at the 2024 World Championship in Brisbane.

Vice President, Pontus Gäbel, from Sweden, will become the Acting President until the next AGM will elect a successor. He paid a heartfelt tribute to Jackson and made a presentation. “Thank you very much. It’s fair to say over the last seven years, after taking over in Barbados, I know that we owe you much for your leadership especially through a few really difficult years. We have good press and have something to write about when we come off the water and you have been instrumental in that. So thank you for all the hard work and dedication you have given the class, from the OKDIA leadership team but also from all the sailors.”

There is major excitement among the sailors in Palma for a great week of racing ahead. Early light wind forecasts have changed to moderate winds for most of the week. Racing begins on Wednesday 30 October and continues through to Sunday 3 November.

2024 OK Dinghy European Championship begins this week in Palma https://okdia.org/news/international/2024-ok-dinghy-european-championship-begins-this-week-in-palma/ Mon, 28 Oct 2024 11:12:42 +0000 https://okdia.org/?p=2338 The OK Dinghy European Championship is being held this coming week at the Real Club Nàutico de Palma. Nearly 80 sailors from 14 countries are expected to arrive in Palma in the coming days. The event will mark the first ever international OK Dinghy championship to be held in Spain.

The defending champion is Charlie Cumbley, who won a close series last year at Arco on Lake Garda. He comes to Palma on the back of a decisive victory at the Autumn Trophy in Bandol last week, against many of the class champions, who will also challenge him in Palma.

The Autumn Trophy is becoming a significant fixture in the International OK Dinghy calendar and this year attracted 45 entries, mostly as a double event on route to Palma. Tim Petetin from the SNB led after the opening day in light winds, but then Cumbley moved to the top of the second day and stayed there until the end. Two days of light winds were followed by two days of heavy wind, and some rain as bad weather swept through the Côte d’Azur. Only one race was sailed on the final day.  Behind Cumbley were former World Champions Thomas Hansson-Mild from Sweden and Roger Blasse from Australia. Report and results here: https://okdia.org/results/autumn-cup-bandol-france-2024/

The Spanish fleet in Palma is a relatively new addition to the OK Dinghy family. Out of the need for something to do during the pandemic, two boats were built in living rooms, and once on the water these attracted great interest, with gradually more and more sailors, from many nationalities, buying and building boats, and having fun on the Bay of Palma. The fleet now numbers almost 25 sailors, so it seemed a natural progression to hold a championship there to support this growth.

While Cumbley, also a former world champion, is arguably the one to beat, he will have some tough opposition. As well as Blasse and Hanson-Mild, former champions include three times European Champion Bo Petersen, from Denmark and New Zealand’s Greg Wilcox. In addition, there is Matt Howard and world championship runner up Andy Davis from Britain, and twice world championship runner up and winner of Kieler Woche this year, Niklas Edler from Sweden. The event has attracted a very deep field of talent.

After a spate of bad weather across the region, the outlook looks more settled and equipment inspection is underway under sunny skies and increasing temperatures.

Registration and equipment inspection is taking place on Monday 28 October and Tuesday 29 October, while racing gets underway on Wednesday 30 October with a 10-race series until Sunday 3 November.

2024 Autumn Cup Bandol, France https://okdia.org/results/autumn-cup-bandol-france-2024/ Sat, 26 Oct 2024 17:15:10 +0000 https://okdia.org/?p=2330 Charly Cumbley wins Autumn Cup, held in Bandol, Côte d’Azur just before the European Championship in Palma.

The Autumn Cup was perfectly timed being 3 days before the start of the Europeans in Palma with a Ferry going from close by Toulon directly to Mallorca.

4 former World Champions where attending with three of them making up the podium in the end.

The first day saw westerly 5-8 knots, relatively stable in direction and strength with a right corner bias. Hardly a cloud in the sky and nice warm weather.

The second day was predicted to have more wind but ended up with 4h postponement ashore with the usual banter in the sun. Them two races in SE winds, starting in 8kn dropping to 4kn by the end of the first race but picking up to 10kn in the second. Light but lovely conditions for late October.

Day three saw considerably more wind from the East. Starting in about 15 to 18 kn and for the second race it picked up to 22 kn. The first two races were up and down course in the next bay from Bandol (Sanary). The left was favoured in both races. By the end of the second race the race committee was challenged with a slipping anchor, after over 1 hour the RC decided to go back to the Bandol Bay and have another race there. This time a triangle course; it was extremely shifty because of cliffs to windward. It was the first time during the regatta that a triangle course was used. In the evening the official regatta dinner was held in the club, starting with finger food followed by Ragou and potatoes then a cheese platter and some apple pie – a food just how you would expect at a big french family fest, good quality and good taste. And of course always accompanied by enough rosé and red wine from the region.

A big thank you should go to the different sponsors, including Greg Wilcox and Fabian Rossbacher who paid for enough free beer for all during the event, the tab was always open for everyone to pour a beer. Also there were enough sponsored prizes for all competitors to get a prize.
